Defense Industry Technology Trends

In today’s day and age, when it comes to technology, changes are being made at a rapid-fire pace. Technology is shaping how wars are fought, how military personnel are being trained, and how our borders are being protected. The United States specifically has a long tradition of embracing new technologies. From the U.S. Navy commissioning the first motorized submarine to the Wright brothers building airplanes for the U.S. Army, the adoption of new military technology continues be embraced. History has shown that militaries with advanced technology have an advantage over those of their rivals. Understanding trends within the industry enables our military to become smarter, faster, and more adaptable to an ever-evolving environment which is critical to our nation’s strength and success.

One specific trend on the rise is artificial intelligence (AI). AI’s capabilities ultimately could have a major impact on military organizations, including defense logistics and cybersecurity. AI has the ability to detect new threats as well as process and analyze vast amounts of data. AI helps improve reaction and the amount of time it takes to draw conclusions to implement more effective military actions. Unmanned vehicles are gathering more intelligence, and mission systems have become increasingly autonomous in air, ground, sea and space. In all these areas, utilizing AI to process data provides a faster analysis, which then enables faster access to insights which support decision-making and operational agility. The shift from descriptive to predictive data analytics drives better decisions. Ultimately, the ability to analyze, adapt, and respond to threats at tactical speeds can mean the difference between success and failure. As a result, predictive analytics yields lower costs and fewer mistakes.

The relationship between human and machine is only increasing. From autonomous systems to exoskeleton technology, human machine collaboration delivers unprecedented capabilities to the warfighter. Evaluating the tasks and actions humans are performing today and asking how machine learning supports missions will allow the United States military to operate safer and faster.

Technology today is more intelligent and it’s adapting to how we behave and learn. In this field, rapid advances can provide the opportunity for military organizations to rethink as they conduct the planning, information gathering, analysis, and strategy development in war. Maintaining tactical advantage against adversaries requires constant innovation. The United States military is frequently seeking new capabilities to maintain battlespace dominance. The United States must remain on the cutting-edge of advanced tools and technology to prepare for the future and maintain its reputation in the world as a strong military superpower.
